IMHO it's just as well you didn't read Wheel of Time when it came out. The writing is just not very good. The worldbuilding and the characters are what make it interesting. The TV show is much better and is giving a lot of space to the characters who surround The Chosen One and what that person's destiny does to the rest of them and the system they've set up. There are also active forces opposing the very meaning of The Chosen One and believing that The Chosen One is actually evil.

But I agree with you that by now, it's a well worn trope and needs more attached to it to make it interesting.
