100 days of enemy recs: 61. Guardian
Guardian (the cdrama) is about Zhao Yunlan, the director of a special division of the police whose job is to deal with issues related to Dixing and Yashou people on Earth - and also to preserve the treaties that keep the fragile peace between the peoples, and keep the existence of the Yashou and Dixing people secret from most humans. Shen Wei is a university professor who keeps getting involved in their cases, and is hiding a mysterious secret.
I didn't immediately have this on my list, because usually in a case like this the two people who fall in love across a vast divide and and ethical conflict have a long stretch of will-they-won't-they to play out etl tropes. Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei, instead of will-they-won't-they, have "No, I'm gonna" energy at first sight. (It's unclear at what point in canon they actually get together, because censorship, but basically you could pick any point after about episode 4 and it works.)
But they do actually fit a lot of the tropes! Zhao Yunlan, as head of the SID, faces a lot of mistrust from Dixing and Yashou, because of the SID's long history of treating them unequally; Zhao Yunlan doesn't agree with that, but has a long way to go to fix it. Shen Wei is not only a Dixing person hiding in disguise, he is also, even more secretly, the powerful Black Cloak Envoy who is Zhao Yunlan's counterpart in Dixing. (Also there is a whole time travel thing where they met for the first time for the second time in the distant past and had a whole other set of suspicions and divisions to work through.)
Also the backup pairing, Guo Changcheng/Chu Shuzhi, is another Dixing/Haixing pair with a different set of tensions to work through. And there's at least one Romeo & Juliet Yashou couple who play a role, and Lin Jing, the techie, gets in a relationship with an enemy agent! So, yes, this is a good canon for this.
I had trouble finding recs because there is a LOT of good fic in this fandom. I read a whole lot of it two years ago, and liked it enough I decided to watch the show, and got about a third of the way in and had to stop for life reasons? But I figured I'd pick it back up again so I stopped reading most of the fic until I could, and, well, we have all learned about me and actually watching shows at this point.
So have three recs that aren't necessarily the best fic I've read, but are all heavy on the identity porn! (This fandom is also extremely good for identity porn.)
