2019 Yuletide Letter

Hi all! I will be adding more to this letter before matching (I hope), or at minimum links and better formatting, but I just got my request in and my brain won't let me go to bed without getting a letter up, so here is the very basics Sorry I got distracted re-reading all the fic for these fandoms. I may still go in and add some links or extra prompts tomorrow, but no worries, that is the most I'm planning to do.

I like crossovers of all sorts, I like setting-swap AUs and urban fantasy/powers type AUs, I like het and gen and slash and poly and other, I tend to be flexible about most things really! All my fandoms this year I am happy to get porn (or not-porn) in many configurations, and I don't really have any blanket DNWs at the moment. This tag covers 15 years of YT seasons, feel free to backread if you are a person who wants to know more, although also feel free to ODAO anything not in my actual signup.

Here is a copy of my signup, I have a very assorted assortment of requests this year!

1. Fandom:Never Gonna Give You Up - Rick Astley (Music Video)
Bartender (Never Gonna Give You Up) Singer | Rick Astley (Never Gonna Give You Up)

Okay, here’s the thing: if you actually sit down and watch this video, it’s really obvious the singer is singing to the bartender. And the bartender is into it, possibly despite himself. They’re doing set-up/sound-check for some kind of small-scale event, and Rick Astley’s character is taking the chance to croon passionate love to the guy he’s super into.

Please write me a story about the forbidden, yet super-soft love affair of bartender and lounge singer. If you want to work in realistic barriers to an interracial gay love affair in 1987, go ahead, but I would also be fine if you went 100% vaseline-smeared pastel fluff instead.

If you can’t ship it, I would totally be up for something that explored the sort of non-shippy bro relationship that would result in what we see in the video instead, write me about how the bartender thought he had better standards in music than that, and yet when the singer sings, he can't help it, or how the two of them keep showing up at the same events and work out the boredom by winding each other up, or anything that works for you!

I’m not opposed to meme references being worked in, and feel free to, like, mis-tag if you must, but mainly I want something as achingly sincere as the song and the video. I nominated as "Rick Astley" because that's how it's credited in IMDB, but I know nothing of the real Rick Astley, so feel free to rename him and make up whatever you want.

2. Papers of the Adam Family - Mark Twain
Any/Worldbuilding

This refers to the whole 'canon' of stories Twain wrote as first-person accounts of the world before Noah's Flood. Hopefully I will have a shareable ebook of them all up on this journal before you see this, I am currently obsessing over the copyediting, but if not: I'm happy if you take any one of them, or any subset, as your canon. They are all in the anthology "The Bible According to Mark Twain" and a good selection are in the anthology "Letters From The Earth"; Adam's Diary and Eve's Diary are available in the usual public domain ebook places.

Mark Twain is, I think, highly undervalued as an early science fiction/fantasy writer, and he writes the pre-Flood world as carefully worldbuilt, rapidly expanding brand-new culture (although, of course, with plenty of opportunity for him to do his usual skewering of contemporary life and culture.) At some point it ended up in my head as universal canon for the antediluvian world, and canon for Adam and Eve’s characters, too.

I would really enjoy anything set in this world, with Twain's characters, other named Bible or myth characters, OCs - exploration of the early cities and the bits around the edges of the world that are hinted at in Methuselah’s diary; more of Shem, or of the actual Flood story that Twain never got to writing, or other traditional stories of this time, fit into Twains world; or Adam and Eve in the years and centuries after Eden, continuing to learn how to be human, watching a massive civilization grow out of their grandchildren, and what it’s like in general to live in a world that’s only a few centuries old and where nobody had ever died of old age; more Scientific Experiments and Linguistic Discoveries in the early days; more about Gladys and Edith and the lives of the other early children that never made it into Scripture; what it was like to live through the transition period between when the world was small enough that everybody knew everybody else and when it wasn't. I would also super enjoy a crossover with any fandom that takes, or implies, the literal truth of the Eden and Flood stories - Dogma? Good Omens? Highlander? Kings? Lucifer? Supernatural? Young Wizards? Something else? - with characters who would have been around back then wandering around the First Cities. I am not particularly interested in the direct 19th century political satire stuff, though feel free to use it to comment on our modern world the way Twain did; and Eve is pale-skinned in most of Twain's canon but please racebend her if the spirit moves you (he contradicted himself in the details plenty anyway).

3. Montaillou - Emmanuel Ladurie
Any/Worldbuilding

So this is a history book that takes an amazing cache of first-person narratives and turns them into a treatise on the worldviews and lives of the people who lived them; what I would really like is for someone to take the material here and untangle it to turn it into stories. Check a few posts down for a list of ideas if you need them, but really any of what we see of these people's lives made into a narrative would make me happy. I nominated the four characters who stood out to me most, personality-wise, if you want a starting point a story from any of their lives and loves would be great, but honestly so would anyone else in the book if they move you more! I'd also love any kind of OC story giving a POV of what it would have been like to live in Occitania during this period, with the heresy and the inquisition but also, you know, a lot of sheep, using the information in the book on daily life to give the OC a vivid world and background. If you want to use a lot of other historical research on the period, go for it! but writing deadlines are a thing so if you want to just take what's in the book as canon and not go off on research, I would be just as happy. I am not into detailed torture porn about the Inquisition, but if you want to touch on that, or its aftereffects on their lives, (or even write them working though it via kinky sex) that's fine.

4. Imperial Radch Series - Ann Leckie
Ekalu (or Any)

I requested Ekalu in hopes of keeping my requests a reasonable length and I have lots of Ekalu stories I would love to get, but honestly I love all things in this fandom and want all the stories. There were too many characters nommed to do a good 'any' letter without writing a book to cover them all, but consider this 'any' in spirit. If you want to pull something from an old IR post on my journal that does not involve Ekalu at all, or you have a story of your heart to write, I promise I will love that too if it's in this fandom.

But I would love something that explores Ekalu's POV; she has a viewpoint on events and people that's different from everyone else's but we don't get to see much of - her feelings about Seivarden, or what it's like to be in a relationship not just with a high-ranking Radchaai but one who is like a noble from a historical vid, (and also being metamour to both her captain and her ship) ; or her backstory, what it was like on Mercy of Kalr before Breq arrived, or in general what it's like to be one of the first generations of enlisted in a military where enlisted *people* is a new concept; or adapting to her promotion and losing her place among the Amaats (and also her slow dawning realization that despite being completely unqualified, due to lack of serious competition she is by far the most competent and least dysfunctional officer on the whole damn ship); or something post-canon, what the world after the ending looks like to someone who was there but not in the middle of everything, her political feelings, how her relationships with Seivarden and Ship settle as Seivarden's and Ship's other relationships change. DNW for this fandom is please don't write any of the raised-Radchaai characters in a way that associates body parts with gender.

5. 19th Century Paleontology RPF
Edward Drinker Cope, Othniel Charles Marsh

I would like Shenanigans, please. Cope/Marsh hatesex in the boneyards is fine. AU where they can summon the spirits of the creatures they have Named and make them fight duels for them is fine. Rap battles in the Academy of Sciences are fine. Sent back in time by steampunk contraption and forced to work together to survive the Jurassic is fine. The Feud gets out of control until they are two mad scientists battling to rule the world is fine. Basically if it's over-the-top and tropey and about Cope and Marsh's epic hatemance, it is great. (You can also write something historically accurate and angsty and meticulously researched, that would also be a delight.) If Cope and Marsh fail you, I would also love anything about Mary Anning, who is also a favorite!

6. The Thick of It (TV)
Any (nommend Malcolm OR Nicola OR Jamie OR Terri)

I like Malcolm/Nicola (so twisty), and I like Malcolm/Jamie (so shouty), and I like Malcolm/Terri (nobody else seems to ship that one, but I like how especially in the early seasons she takes none of his shit, and would enjoy watching her crushing him under her heel consensually.) I also like Nicola and Malcolm and Jamie and/or Terri individually or in other combinations! (Nicola/Jamie triangulating on Malcolm, or teaming up against him in a frenemy-of-my-frenemy sense, would also be amazing. Terri and Nicola getting to have moments of being, if not quite friends, at least allies, against all the boys would also be amazing.) Also post-canon 'I got out of politics and now I am learning to be happy again' comfort-fic (or Terri being smugly functional in the face of everyone else) would be great! I am focusing on those four characters because they were nominated and I enjoy them, but if you would like to write me about Julius or Emma or Stewart or Sam or whoever (shipped with anyone) instead, I am also in favor. I also have a great weakness for any sort of fantasy/powers/magic/sff/etc AU in this fandom - all these over-the-top personalities having the chance to externalize their OTT-ness as they deserve.

DNW: Please nothing specific about post-2016 politics, it's still too soon and too depressing.
