I just learned there was a Victorian circus proprietor in Britain who was black. Pablo Fanque (born William Darby in Norfolk). Like, I did take a Victorian history course. (My work on Circus was more specifically American) But then I learned about Ira Aldridge from tumblr.

Someone needs to do a Tour of the Roman Empire bibliography/survey to cross-reference stuff.
