I mean, I like Tom Hardy and his Eddie was great, but I bet he would have made a great Carlton Drake too! I feel like it just really messed with the characterization to not have him be played by a white dude. There are douchebag South Asian CEOs in Silicon Valley too, so it's no that far off model, but the fact that there was nothing in the script or anything that marked him as non-White *other* than the casting (and that I'm bad enough at faces that I didn't recognize the actor until much later in the movie) meant I spent half the film going "is he supposed to be a character of color or is this just a Generic Swarthy Villain, I though we were past that as a society".
(I do think there would be issues with an Eddie of color getting away with some of the things Tom Hardy-Eddie did, *without* the insulation of a ton of money, but I think I could manage suspension of disbelief, and I think you could also have added some really interesting resonances with just a few changes to the script.)
