I have actually read several of the later books in the series for various reasons, and found them - less racist than expected? Which is really faint praise, given expectations. But, like, later on, iirc, there's a Hidden Advanced Civilization in the jungle that's Black African, which a lot of modern adventure writers still can't manage. And also I think Burroughs got slightly better as he got further into the twentieth century.
But, I mean, it's Burroughs, so yeah, RACIST?
I do still have a fondness for Barsoom, though, and I feel like if I want to talk about Burroughs I should have read Tarzan at least once. Plus, my great-grandma, grandma, and mom were all Tarzan fans, so there's that.
