There's multiple entry points; you could start with any book but the very last one. The first book is The Winter Prince, which is basically a standalone Arthurian which mentions Ethiopia but isn't set there. It's excellent but not much like the rest of the series. A Coalition of Lions starts the Ethiopia sequence; it has a lot of really complex politicking that I found hard to follow. The Sunbird starts the Telemakos sequence.
