The Tiptree story is A Momentary Taste of Being. I've kind of spoiled it for you now since it's supposed to be a reveal, sorry (and also it's not exactly what I described, since humans are the gametes in that story - but the basic idea about them being the short-lived stage is the same). Still worth reading, though.
