I'm descended from a long line of "Don't care, you politicians and powerful folks will screw us over either way, and war just means ruined harvests and dead kids, give us whatever loyalty oaths or whatever and we'll sign them" smallfarmers, far as I can tell. They seem to have endured through both the Revolution and the Civil War on that basis with nobody serving in any army. I find that a valid strategy. (...and possibly also some Hessians, but that's poorly documented.)

The music is really good though if you like that sort of thing!
