Unfortunately, my problem is that Hugo tells you a lot of history WHILE ASSUMING CERTAIN PIECES OF KNOWLEDGE on the part of the audience and so those of us who actually know basically zero of anything to do with French history are left going "aaaand WHAT are you alluding to there, sir?" Sigh.
