melannen: Commander Valentine of Alpha Squad Seven, a red-haired female Nick Fury in space, smoking contemplatively (Default)

con.txt is coming!

Coming apace, and I'm finally caught up on all the e-mails I was putting off about panel stuff, so now it's time to consider the rest!

The panel schedule is up (though it may still see some revision) and there are, like, five whole panel slots where there's nothing I absolutely HAVE TO be at, so who knows, I may even do some freeform socializing. And less than twelve of the panels this year are ones I proposed, and I'm only modding three or four, so that is excellent. Of course there are also six panel slots with at least two that I absolutely must attend.

Here it is time for you to help me decide stuff, gentle readers!

Cosplay: They announced the cosplay theme, which is "comics". Now I just have to decide what to do!

Some cosplay context for cosplaying at con.txt: there is generally not a whole lot of cosplay at con.txt, and what there is, is usually within a few steps of street clothes - weird street clothes maybe, but stuff you can move in, that is not unusually revealing or involve lots of latex, props, or makeup. On the other hand, I want there to be more cosplay there, and there's been more every year, so I'm willing to push it a little. And the theme is not strict.

Here are some possibilities of variable workability:

Madelyn Mack
+I have the whole outfit finally!
-Wore pretty much the same thing two years ago.
+Really like getting to wear the dress
-It's hundred-year-old silk and disintegrates more every time I wear it
+What good is it if I just leave it hanging in a closet?
-Nobody who doesn't already know me knows who she is.
+Must spread the good word!
-Not a comics fandom.
+Madelyn Mack!

Wear the Madelyn Mack costume but tell people I'm Adele Blanc-Sec instead
+/- see above re: dress
+different than last con!
-outfit not as perfect for Adele as Madelyn
+comics fandom, fits theme!
-do more people know Adele than Madelyn?
+Adele Blanc-Sec!

Take one of the four five gray cloaks I already own, add some scarlet stitchwork and fake horns to the hood, say I'm being the Sufferer
+ Would be easy, and pretty recognizable!
- Would be half-arsed, since no way am I messing with gray body paint
+ I love wearing cloaks! So comfy.
- June in DC, not really cloak weather
+ Although is June and cloak weather now, and the con itself has A/C
- Every time I try to do anything Homestuck other than write fic, I stick my foot in my mouth
+ comics fandom!
- con.txt does not seem to be a Homestuck-heavy crowd
+ is totally something I would keep wearing around after the con.

Acquire a blue jumpsuit and an eyepatch somewhere and go as Commander Valentine from my icon
+ People apparently visualize me as her already
- do not have a blue jumpsuit or the fabric to make one, and am broke
+ Commander Valentine is awesome
- Hardly anybody knows who she is, tiny fandom is tiny
+ It's a comics fandom though! An awesome one!
- Haven't even been keeping up with Report fandom lately
+ Could pose with Avengers cosplayers and claim I'm AU-girl-Nick-Fury-in-space.

Make myself the Steve-Rogers-as-Dorothy-Gale Captain America pinafore from this unfinished Avengers/Wizard of Oz fanart, with red-white-and-blue basket instead of shield because I have colored reed but do not have vibranium
+ would be really fun to make
- would take more work than anything else on the list
+ am really amused by the design
- other people doing femme-avengers outfits
+ could probably piece it together from fabric I already own
- is pretty complicated conceit, would anybody get it?
+ Hey there was even a Wizard of Oz reference in the movie!
- am never going to finish the fanart because can't figure out how to fit Bruce's awesome in
+ Comics fandom, and Everybody knows the Avengers right now
- Whether they want to or not.
- Am kind of old to play Dorothy

Sew a bolero jacket to match one of my skirts and go as Unspecified Barrayaran Woman
+ Is totally my style already
- Would anybody be able to tell I was cosplaying?
+ Would be fairly easy to make
- not sure if I have sufficiently-matching fabric
+ Barrayar!
- not a comics fandom

Pirate.
+ Can't go wrong with pirates
- Not really a specifically con-txt sort of fandom
+ Would be comfy and simple to throw together.

Drag my Tora Olafsdottir costume out of storage and see if it fits
+ Everybody who knows who Ice is really loves the costume
- Does anybody still remember who Ice is?
+ Would require basically no extra work on my part, and justify continuing to store the costume
- Full spandex and a wig is kind of going overboard for the sort of cosplay that usually happens at con-txt
+ Is a comics fandom! And *not* Avengers :P

Dejah Thoris of Helium, or more realistically Hilda-Corners-as-Thuvia-of-Ptarth
+ Would definitely be easy!
- Would be cold.
+ Would give me an excuse to wear all my too-sparkly costume jewelry and my fur wrap!
- Is even more *not* the kind of cosplay that happens at con-txt.
+ Barsooooom. And I acquired a bunch of the current run of Dejah Thoris comics so it even counts as a comics fandom!
- would probably have to shave my legs. And still not going to mess with body paint.
(note: I am almost definitely too chicken for this one.)

Just wear fannish/comics T-shirts okay
+ Easy!
- Boring!
+ Not risky!
- Does nothing to increase profile of cosplay at slash cons.

Wear my "normal" clothes and see how many people ask who I'm cosplaying as.
+ Is always fun!
- Con-txt may be to low on cosplay and too high on creative dressers for anybody to do this
+ Definitely easy!

Some other comics or comics-ish character I can throw together from stuff I have around the house or can borrow from more hard-core cosplay friends, which you will specify below. Note: "stuff I have around the house or can borrow" is a pretty big category actually, so feel free to suggest things. And so is "comics", as that includes manga, all newspaper strips ever, webcomics, and any character who has ever had a tie-in comic done.

Actually, you should cosplay as this character instead of one of those:

Next, what should I put in the con-txt art show/auction?

Amigurumi Tardis - is finished, is cute, would match daleks from last time. Downside, is the prototype - I've only done one so far. And I couldn't figure out how to make it bigger on the inside within the physics I was using, so this one is just a plush.
Crochet some more daleklings. And actually get the pattern to where you would not be ashamed to share it! - they sold last time, I have the pattern pretty much down. Other hand, done it before, they take awhile to do, and I'd have to work on them pretty constantly to get a couple done before the con.
Set of amigurumi Homestuck characters - I have half-a-dozen or so of these almost done, and some more in various stages, and they are adorable. I'd have to get them done before the con though, and I still don't like the way I'm doing the feet. Also, doesn't seem like there's going to be a lot of Homestuck fandom there.
Set of Amigurumi Avengers characters using the Homestuck base - am pretty sure these would be adorable, and easier to finish than the Homestuck ones, and have been wanting to do Avengers!trolls every time I see Loki's silly helmet and being Avengers would probably sell. On the other hand, feel weird about using a doll base that's really closely based on the Homestuck SD style for something else. And would have to start from scratch right now.
Make a Patchwork QUILTBAG already - I have a pattern (more or less) and the fabric, but haven't started one yet, and there would be a lot of trial-and-error involved. On the other hand really want to try making one and I bet con-txt would enjoy it.
Print out a high-quality, functional hard copy of the Barrayaran Flimsy Dolls, possibly with bonus material - could do this easy enough, but would have to sink a little bit of money into it, and it's already been up online for awhile, so not new. Have no idea how/if it would sell, either.
Register with something really, really vague and then see what happens

Actually, you should do this:

Also, [personal profile] amaresu has put up a post at [community profile] asexual_fandom for people trying to do asexual meetups at cons, and it is very lonely, if anybody felt like dropping by.
