Well, if you had a college religion class that made you read the New Testament you probably have more formal training in it than I do! But I was never prevented from spending the church sermon daydreaming/doodling/fic outlining fannish stuff that plays with Christian themes, or Christian stuff that plays with fannish themes, so, like, I have spent about half an hour a week doing that for twenty years. :D
