I totally agree with "whichever POV works best with the story"! I think though I'd sort of internalized "Always, alwasy 3PL unless there's a really compelling reason for something else", which is not quite the same! Your version is healthier.

And it's interesting that you like 3PL because of its capacity for unreliable narrators when keizh above said she liked it because it's *less* likely to have an unreliable narrator! (See my reply to her for some extended thoughts on unreliability and POV)
