They use a fair amount of technology, like the laptops and the phone - it was kind of amusing that the ring in the original SIS got transmuted into a ringing phone, and at least they don't go to great length to avoid it, like some crime shows do, but yeah. The use of tech seems to be mostly limited to phones and the internet. Where Holmes the original was out past the bleeding edge of forensic science, Sherlock seems to be several years behind. Several years behind the original Holmes. (The number of times I yelled at the screen about contaminating the crime scene or being careful about fingerprints...)
