Fannish Things of Late

1. So lately there seems to be a lot of Clint Barton fic in Avengers movieverse fandom, and you know what I want? I want a story where movie!Clint likes the purple costume. Where they have to talk him out of it, not in to it. Why is fandom buying in to the idea that purple makes you unmanly? Why is fandom writing a Clint who can be in an open and loving relationship with Coulson, or who is Darcy's sensitive, feminist boyfriend, but who can't handle the idea of, *shudder*, wearing purple in public?

I will grant you that Hawkeye's costumes have been among the most consistently terrible in comics history, but it's not the color that's offensive. (Actually a mix of dark colors is better for blending in at night than pure black anyway.) Fandom! Give me a purple-and-proud-of-it Clint! Preferably a purple-and-proud-of-it-Clint who has zero taste in clothing!

2. I finally [redacted for yuletide] and now [redacted for yuletide] asexual threesome of awesome, even though [redacted for yuletide].

3. Also I [redacted for yuletide] and threesome AU, because if [redacted for yuletide] canon would have gone there, yes? And of course [redacted for yuletide].

4. I am falling in love with [redacted for yuletide], who is even awesomer than I expected, if you [redacted for yuletide]. I kind of want to throw together a [redacted for yuletide]-parts-only version of canon, because that's how I'm [redacted for yuletide].

5. Why do I do this to myself every yuletide? AAAAHHHH [redacted] [redacted] [redacted]

6. Going to the DC yuletide write-in today! Maybe I will actually be able to talk about some of this there. :p

7. terajk wrote a tiny bit of Ryoga/Ranma/Akane genderqueer polyfic like I still really want the epic of! And she managed to somehow pack an entire epic's worth of implications into less that two hundred words. It is awesome. You should go read it.

8. I finally got around to watching the Peter/Harriet BBC miniseries over Thanksgiving. It was brilliant! Almost as good as the books, and part of the reason I waited so long to watch them is that I didn't believe they could be as good as the books. I wish there was some way to make every film adaptation as good - they have proved that it is possible. (I suppose "not made in Hollywood" is a good starting place, though.)

9. Now I am re-reading the Lord Peter books again! Because! There still needs to be Sayers femmeslash out there. Also, usually when I read a published novel, I have one of two reactions: "Wow, that wasn't all that great, I could write something that good" or "Wow, that was amazing, I could never do that, I should just give up on writing now." (They are not necessarily accurate statements, or reflecting well on me, but at least I know that?) Gaudy Night, on the other hand, makes me go "Wow. What do I have to do to make myself into somebody who could write that?" I need to find more books like that.

also somebody should write Sayers RPF where she's being investigated for murder while writing Strong Poison. And then be investigated for murder while writing the RPF. A story by a female mystery writer being investigated for murder about a female mystery writer being investigated for murder while writing a story about a female mystery writer being investigated for murder while writing a story about a female mystery writer being investigated for murder! It would be the best ever.

10. Someone tell me that nobody needs to vid Thor/Loki to I Want A Cold Cold Christmas.

I am also going to the write-in. And I need to talk to someone about my [redacted] threesome of [redacted] characters, and why [redacted] threesome in the first place, and what I can do with them that engages with the [redacted] without [redacted] (which my recipient doesn't want).

(I mostly want to do canon squee, and moaning about why I decided to try to write this in less than a month, because luckily I got a great recipient this year.

I have that same problem with reacting to books, re: #9! Finding the rare and precious "How can I do that too?" ones rather than either of the others, definitely precious.

You guys are making me wish there was more than just one semi-local-to-me person doing Yuletide. And that she didn't live an hour away, and is anyway in Seattle at the moment.

(I am having great fun with my both [redacted] and [redacted] take on canon, which I think my recipient intended as two separate suggestions but I'm delighting in combining. Plus the whole [redacted] aspect is SO MUCH FUN. The only problem I'm having is that I'm up to a wordcount of [redacted] and STILL not quite half finished, OMG BEARS BEARS.)

If I were to write you a proper genderqueer Ranma polyfic epic (where they have lots of adventures and Akane and Ranma tell their dads they aren't really into this whole marriage business,) can Akari come, too? The way she engages with Ryoga's disability makes me go "eee!"; she's also pretty badass (she trains sumo-wrestling pigs and RIDES the biggest one). Plus, you can never ship Akane with too many ladies :D

Yeah, I think I've been spoiled, I will never be able to move anywhere that has a lower population density of awesome, meetup-going fangirls than here. (Which basically limits me to, um, here, NYC, Boston, London, and maybe Portland or Chicago? I dunno, someone should research this! Hasn't there even been a fannish census by location?...)


(I am [redacted] words in, which seems great, but going by the current outline, that is only about 1/6 of the way done, except that sections keep getting longer so it is probably more like 1/10.... I am combining [redacted] [redacted] and [redacted] from recipients request but going by the request I'm pretty sure she'll like it.)

Have you seen the BBC version? They weren't even trying to fool anybody in the BBC version - I mean they never said "lesbians" but it was pretty obvious we were meant to read them that way.

I have to confess that I still haven't gotten far enough into Ranma canon to encounter Akari in person, but I approve of anything that leads to more ladyslash! (Also, you don't have to write it for me! Write what you want, and write it for the world! The world needs it. :D )

I have not! The Wimsey books are one of those things where I am SO attached to the original and have such a clear vision of the characters in my head that I'm afraid to watch any adaptation at all, but if it is awesome I may have to check it out.

I avoided them for the same reason, but I found that actually it was REMARKABLY CLOSE. Pretty much all of the dialogue is verbatim or close to verbatim from the books, too.

(Okay Harriet didn't have quite the same hairstyle I'd imagined for her, and Peter looked a little bit too old in Strong Poison, but that was about it really. Of course it probably helped that I'd listened to a couple of the Petherbridge audiobooks already.)

Did you watch Gaudy Night when you got home? That one is not quite as well done - I mean, it's still good, but they changed more stuff and left out more of the good bits.

Yep! They didn't actually change as much as I thought they had, upon re-reading of the book - they cut out a lot of stuff (Jerry! *sobs*), and they condensed the timelines a lot, but most of that was necessary to make it work at a reasonable length on TV, really. But what they did put in was pretty much all right out of the book, and they didn't change anything fundamental to the story. I can pretend the missing parts happened around the edges. (Except for the way they changed the mechanics of the incident in the science lab, I haven't quite figured out why they did that.)

I agree with you both about Hawkeye, who sometimes falls prey to some unpleasant masculinity stereotypes in fic (I don't really know his canon), and about the necessity of more Ranma genderqueer polyfic in the world. It is a sad lack.

When I think back to my favorite playing-with-Ranma's-gender stories from the 90s, when I was really into that fandom, they seem painfully binary now. Failure of imagination on both my part and the fandom's, I guess. Ranma could be a boy or painfully transition to being a girl, but not both or neither or something too complicated and squishy to even describe in a binary system. :/ (Especially ironic given that I identify as genderqueer myself. I didn't have that vocabulary back then, though.)
