I think a large part of my ability to continue to enjoy that sort of stuff is down to the fact that I have always done it... alone. From books. Without having to interact with the other people who are interested in it (or at least the sort of people who are loudly interested in it - I know other people in RL who quietly read the books, too.) I suspect they would have spoilt the fun quickly.
