Um.
I've been reading Thor fanfic.
(No, don't ask - ours not to reason why - oh, fine, okay,
sophia_sol linked to
sentientcitizen's Within It We Are Nameless, which is a story about how Odin's brother Villi, the creator of cunning, came back to Asgard to mentor young Loki. And Villi, who may seem strangely familiar to some readers, just happens to have spent many centuries on Midgard, using names like Benjamin Adams and Adam Pierson and perhaps certain others. :D
Oh, and then somebody on some post mentioned that there was a fic where Sleipnir inherits the throne of Asgard by his right as Odin's eldest grandson, which just yes!!! I did not manage to find said fic, but I went looking for others, and found some very interesting things.
And of course Astolat is writing Thor fic now. And so is Aria, which is just about as irresistable.
And then I had read enough to encounter one of the many things that makes me wish they were fanficcing the Eddas instead of the Marvelverse, which is, Laufey's a GUY?? and went looking for fics where he's Loki's mother anyway, and - yay! - found them.
Also I am trying to avoid catching up with Dresden Files fandom until I have my hot little hands on the new book, because I am miraculously and largely without my doing unspoiled for it, and it might actually be nice to stay that way for a bit.
So anyway.)
I am strangely discontent for being this early into reading a big new fandom. Specifically, I am discontent with Loki/Thor (I have been reading Loki/Thor because that's what most of the longfic so far is, and also searching Delicious for just Thor does not work, so I go with it for now.) I think it's because I am reading this not as a fan of the Thor movie (which I have not seen) or the Marvelverse Thor (who I am interested in mostly because DON BLAKE, who apparently does not happen in movieverse), but as someone who has been a fan of Norse mythology in all its myriad retellings (Jul i Valhal = awesome) for some time, and therefore I am going into this fandom with a weird combination of newness and world-weariness. Sort of the same way I came to Sherlock Holmes fandom and got annoyed with Holmes/Watson, actually.
My problem with Thor/Loki fic comes down to: In many fandoms where people write a slash pairing about two people who have been, essentially, shield-brothers for years and years and years, and then insist on writing schmoopy slash fics in which they are, ahem, falling for the first time, I tire of it quickly. If these people have really been this close for this long, I assume that this would have come up at least once in the intervening years. Case study: Jack and Daniel in SGA. I will totally buy fic in which they didn't ever acknowledge what was between them until Season 10 when they had less at stake; I don't buy fic in which they didn't notice what was between them until S10.
As for Thor and Loki... In any universe in which a physical relationship between them is a possibility, Thor and Loki have been screwing around with each other pretty much since they hit puberty. Obviously. So stop with the schmoopy post-movie first-time fic!
Um.
Also, there is surprisingly little mpreg, considering the source material. :P
... I should probably just close the computer and finish reading that stack of Elizabeth Boyer novels I brought with me to Pennsic. (Oh, why is it so blatantly obvious that Skalgr is secretly Dyrstygger, only a quarter of the way into the book, and why am I still reading it avidly anyway? Why was there no online fandom when I was in high school so I could do stupid memes about what my fylgja form was, and whether I was Ljosalfar or Dokkalfar or Scipling or Duergar or Rhbu, instead of just doodling lingorms in the back of my notebook? ...why is there not an online fandom for these books now? Dammit, I could be reading Leifr/Ljosa/Thurid instead of Loki/Thor right now!)

I suppose they called Laufey the king rather than the queen at some point but if the frost giants had visible gender markers I don't remember them...

THIS WOULD BE RELEVANT TO MY INTERESTS. er. that is, if you can remember anything in particular that you would give a glowing review or at least a lukewarm, yeah, not bad?
in return i will point at
also also, it is not much, but there are mentions of crossdressing thor in a totally unrelated Dresden Files AU that

And fandom has decided basically that ice giants are zir and don't think about gender the same way the Asgardians do, which is fabulous.
I think that there's a lot of first time fic because the movie implies that Thor and Loki and friends are quite young actually. (and Marvel verse has the myths we know as everyone's past life, so yeah)
But there are a lot of fics out there that aren't like that at all and are fabulous!
Sorry that I went on and on, but I have just been loving the world-building mythological fun that happening right now.

(And only two fics I've found so far where Odin isn't straight/cis. Hmmph. I guess I will have to turn back to DF fic for my dose of Odin as seidkona.)

Haven't seen the movie, but apparently comics!Laufey is clearly male. I am definitely enjoying all the fics where the frost giants do gender differently, though.

I need to go find the fics that have the Loki/Thor relationship I'm looking for, I know! They must be out there. I just decided to whine on here instead. :D
I am enjoying the mythological fun too, althogh TBH between Merlin and Dresden Files (and Holmes) and now Thor, I am getting a bit worn out on fans discovering actual! mythology! for the first! time! ever! and getting all excited. /BOFQ

Thank you for recs! And yay, crossdressing Thor is fic by you! (And there is also Hey, Little Liar on the kinkmeme, with drag queen!Loki acting as the patron deity of mpreg. Mmm, should go re-read that.)

dag queen!Loki, you don't say however could that be why i have never heard of such a thing ahemahem LOOK A PTERODACTYL. *shifty eyes*

Some of the Thor/Loki AUs have actually made me wonder how long the writers have been in to Marvel Comics, because they really remind me of Xavin/Karolina from Runaways. (Karolina, alien princess, is informed that she was betrothed at birth to Xavin, Skrull nobility, in order to stop a war. This hits a snag when Karolina comes out as lesbian, until Xavin points out that Skrulls are genderfluid shapeshifters and she can be whatever Karolina needs her to be, they fall in love and live happily ever after, minus the occasional war and exile to Earth. Sometimes comics canon is actually worth it...)

That sounds like a really neat dynamic to carry over. And I am way, way to intrigued. (Which is how I also say, arr, I'm familiar with Runaways.) Bother, I see a lot of Thor fic in my reading!future. ...When big bangs and the strange way the Dresden fandom and I interact (being that I want to write everything, and read occasionally, and that never happens to me) isn't in the way.

(I am not claiming that Loki and Thor have to be in a sexual relationship. I'm just saying that, if you postulate a story-verse where the normal laws of slash fandom apply, then, according to* said laws, they have always been doing it. )
*my standard interpretation of said laws, that is. They have the basic Doctor/Master type of relationship: boyhood friends, brothers-in-arms adventuring together, increasing tension due to differing moral alignments, then it all goes bad, generally in a way that involves possible universe-destruction and/or people being imprisoned in eternal torment. It doesn't work for me to have sexual tension randomly appear at some late point in that trajectory; either it was there early on, or it isn't ever going to be there, or you really have to work hard to sell it to me why their relationship is developing in a new direction when they've already been as close as two people can be. With some pairs I can accept that they were both just too oblivious to figure it out until a moment of crisis, or too far in denial to notice, but not Loki.

Oh! Obviously! :D

Crash ALL the threads
a) Loki can shapeshift
b) Loki has just learned something about himself that changes his self-perception massively
Cue Evol Loki going HO HO THOR YOU HAVE FORGIVEN ME BUT I WILL SHOW YOU I WILL MAKE YOU HATE ME FOREVER BY MOLESTING YOU and Thor going "Okay! :D Awesome idea!"
Evol Loki: I WILL RAVISH YOU WHILE PRETENDING TO BE A FROST GIANT
Thor: Kinky :D ! You have the best ideas. Ooh, ooh, look, I'm a blushing maiden! *swoon*"
Evol Loki: I WILL DISGUISE MYSELF AS SIF
Thor: OMG awesome just never tell her.
Evol Loki: *having too much fun cuddling, forgets about the whole 'plot to make Thor hate him'*
Re: Crash ALL the threads
...that story does exist, right?
I'm just having issues with the stories where there's apparently no homosexual taboo and no incest taboo in Asgard and the writer hasn't bothered writing in any other extenuating circumstances (like Loki's embodiment issues) that would keep them apart, and yet somehow the idea never occurred to them until halfway through her story.
Re: Crash ALL the threads
I confess, I'm not in the fandom at all. I stick to TDF writing mah Odin manporn. (DF stole all the gay Odin porn that is why there is none in marvelverse?)
Re: Crash ALL the threads
Loki coming into his gianthood could also make Thor more attracted to him if The Aesir share humanity's 'mate with the Other' instincts.
