I used to dismiss that idea based on the idea that using anything that eats meat as a meat source is just inefficient math. But there was an article I read in Archeology magazine recently that made the case that there were South American societies that, in the absence of other domesticable animals, used dogs as a primary protein source - and fed the meat dogs almost entirely on cornmeal. So I suppose it's theoretically possible, if you set things up just right with a meat-bred underclass.
