I read the first three books and enjoyed them a lot, though I'm only moderately sensitive to skeevy misogyny issues (meaning, I can usually set it aside for the duration of the work and just accept that's how this world goes). From what I remember, it was pretty clear that it was just the character thinking that way, not that the author approved, if you know what I mean.

The first trilogy is pretty chronological, but is also pretty good at briefing you about what happened earlier. If you're the type to get annoyed about spoilers, read 'em in order. If not, read 'em in whatever order you can get your hands on them.
