A fandom entry!
I'm posting this from Seshat, my old linux-running desktop computer that hasn't been turned on for at least six months and hasn't been 'net connected for even longer. And, wow. It's like stepping back into my brain as it existed years ago. It's *freaky*.
Among other things, one of the files that was left open the last time it was on was some preliminary work for the story that's become my NaNo novel which is *so good* that it's leaving me in despair that I'll manage anything that good ever this month.
And the backdrop is a UFO picture that once appeared on APOD.
(Also a bunch of mp3s that I forgot existed. And half a season of unwatched FMA episodes... And there's the fact that the root password is *almost* but *not quite* entirely like my current lj password.) Now I have to decide if it's worth the trouble to try to get Seshat to show up on the house's intranet - or at least figure out how to ssh into it from one of the other computers, which might be less hassle overall.
Anyway, speaking of unwatched episodes, I have now seen a total of two episodes of Supernatural. The first one was basically Home (XF's Home, that is, since SPN even steals its *episode titles* q-:) only much less creepy, less well-plotted, and with not-as-hot or as fun or as woobie leads. The second was was bascially XF's Squeeze, and ditto.
The fandom, however, is *something else*. I suppose I should give the canon at least three chances, right? For magic? And I don't currently have a Thursday show ... I know there are at least a couple SPN-watchers on my flist - if you were going to rec one episode for me to download to win me over, one that *wouldn't* invite negative comparisons to XF, which would it be?
(Note: one in which main character has a loved one taken away by Big Bad while he is helpless, and then sets out on quest to find out the Truth and kill monsters, *will* invite XF comparisons, trust me.)
Also I finally watched McKay and Mrs. Miller, and you're all really lucky it's NaNo, or I *would* be writing a "Mer And Jean: Rogue Demon Hunters" fic right now.
I also got a chance to watch the pilot episode of Brisco County, Jr. last week, and wow. It's, like, the perfect show. It's like, what if Indiana Jones were actually in the old West instead of the 1930's? And a lawyer instead of an archeologist? And looking for ancient *alien* artifacts? And his sidekick was Jerry Espenson from BL? If only Bruce Campbell was at least as good an actor as the horse...
The Tenth Doctor has yet to impress me to the extent that Nine (or even Seven) did, but then I seem to have managed to miss all the episodes that everyone said were the good ones. And I'm *womanfully* resisting the lure of Torchwood for now, so there.
I missed House this week due to Halloween and am currently in the process of downloading it. BL and Bones continue to rock my socks off. Oh, Angela and Hodgins! I think Hodgins is going to be my TV boyfriend for awhile, and by that I mean, forever. His smile! Swings! *melts* Sorry, Frohike, you get to be second place. (I'm starting to really wish I had requested Hodgins/Angela/Zack for
yuletide. Only then I wouldn't be the one writing it, see.)
(Also, do you *know* how confusing it is to have windows open at the same time which are talking about: Jack/Elizabeth, John/Sam, Jack/Cam, and *none of them* were Stargate? It's almost as bad as when I was reading HP and XMM at the same time and I kept finding fics with headers containing permutations of R, S, J, L and getting *really* confused.)
And then there's
yuletide. Assignments just came out, and mine is *clearly* a case of karma coming back and kicking me hard. But, y'know, in a *good* way. *grin*. I know what novels I'll be re-reading this month.
And if the poor person who got my assignment is poking around, well, Dear Santa:
This is the first year that I have asked for specific characters and 'ships in my all requests, and all really, really, obscure fandoms, and I'm feeling all bad about that now. If you don't think you can do the 'ships, that is *fine*. Pre-ship or friendship fic for any of those pairs would make me just as happy as outright ship, and sex is *definitely* not necessary. Even good yummy gen in any of those fandoms yay. (Although, honestly? If you know these canons and managed to *not* see the slash potential for any of these pairings, my hat is off to you, srsly.) UST or unrequited or established as background to some other story would be *wonderful* for any of them, too.
Also, I know it's traditional to say in these things "As long as it's like canon I'm happy," but I don't even really care if it's too much like canon. Go *wild*, man. (Or don't - just like canon is good, too, *believe* me.)
As for the specific fandoms - I've asked for Lucky Starr every year so far, and if you're the one who finally writes it, I love you forever, no matter what you end up writing. The only thing I really don't want is any sort of explicit Lucky/Bigman, because that's just *wrong*, man. And if you don't go for the slash, you know what would also be awesome? Making them face an actual rounded, real, female character. Seeing as there aren't any in the books. :P
For Frontier Wolf I think I said everything I wanted in the signup. Except that if you write me Frontier Wolf fic I will love you forever.
I realized a day after I submitted my request that I probably shouldn't have listed Cadfael as one of my characters when what I was really requesting was Philip/Olivier, so if you opened your request and went "she wants *what*?" I'm really, really sorry. Just Cadfael would make me happy, too. Especially anything about young warrior Cadfael. (What, me? Crusader fetish? Nooo....) Although if you do write Philip/Olivier of some sort, I love you forever.
And if you're the one person who finally pulled Rosemary&Thyme out of the red of unoffered limbo, I already love you forever, even if you end up dashing off something desperate at the last minute and forget how to use commas. And you don't *have* to ship them in your story if you don't want to. Or, well, let's say that as long as you write something like their canon relationship I'll believe you're shipping them anyway, so there.
Also, I'm not as scary as this makes me sound, promise. I'm just kind of manic right now. because,
yuletide! Of course, I'll probably be at least this manic when the archive finally goes back up, so maybe it's fair warning...?.
