March 18th, 2005 03:23 pm - every word of every song that he sang
Mmmm. I'm home for spring break, and got the wireless router set up again with a minimum of cursing and knee pain. Yay home!

I had "This American Life" on again while I was packing this morning-- this episode specifically-- which opens with ex cerpts from the Lyndon B. Johnson presidential tapes, and I had one of those moments of acute nostalgia [livejournal.com profile] siegeofangels was talking about-- this can be my perfect moment, okay? Because once upon a time-- it must have been the year of '99-'00-- c-span radio was playing those tapes, uncut and unedited except for bleep-outs, all night every night. That was the year I finally got my driver's license and I spent most evenings driving back from extracurricular activities, with c-span on, listening to him wheel and deal. Hearing that voice again just brought that time back to me *acutely*, the last year when everything was still the same and the future stretched on before me forever like the winding roads to school and back which I knew so well I'd get where I was going without being sure how I'd gotten there...

I'm not sure what it says that the sound of my senior year of high school is not pop songs or television shows, but the voice of a president who was out of office twenty-five years before I was born. But ooooh, what a voice. I think I fell a little in love with him that year, listening to him doing the best he could with a hard job and hard people.

"President Johnson", along with Him and Her, had a cameo in the Batman movie, but it the impersonator didn't sound at all like him; it was a silly overdone parody of a Texas accent. Actually it sounded almost like our current president. *sigh*.

I'm doing laundry now. The black velvet overalls that I'm wearing in this user icon are going very bald, so I think once they're clean and dry I'm going to rip them apart and use the better pieces to sew my teddy bear, KB, a new suit-- he's so old and ragged that I daren't even sew up the rents anymore because the stitches will just rip through the old fabric, so I keep him dressed in protective clothing, and his old suit, which I hand-sewed out of scraps at my grandmother's house when I was about twelve, was getting very worn out. I think he will look very suave in skintight black velvet with scarlet trim. Maybe I'll do a cape and cowl too. C:
