The horrible rush of end-of-semester stuff has slightly slacked off. Sort of. I mucked out the bog of eternal stench that my room was becoming and caught up on sleep and started to decompress, and today I've been studying for Groundwater Chemistry by way of trying to figure out if it's pseudoscientifically possible that vampires have an anaerobic metabolism based on chemosynthesis with the Fe2+ iron in hemoglobin.
And since
zodiaccat called me out,
Total number of films I own on DVD/Video: Well, on DVD, the 3 Harry Potter movies, POTC, season seven of X-Files, the Batman movie, Highlander II, two Cary Grant movies (Charade and Penny Arcade, I think), Creature Comforts (which is a collection of shorts by the people who did Wallace and Gromit), and a couple episodes of the Flash Gordon TV show. So that's about a dozen, counting one box as one movie. Oh, and I still have a disk of Lone Gunman that
dreamsquirrel loaned me a couple weeks ago. On video, I have no clue; I've made no effort to sort what's 'mine' from the family's; we have 'lots'. At school right now I have Fellowship of the Ring, Fight the Future, the Indiana Jones trilogy (taped off of cable) and four eps of Atlantis (ditto). On the computer, I have It's a Wonderful Life, one Atlantis ep and the making-of special, and about a dozen episodes total of various anime that people on my flist were dealing at various times. And a bunch of vids.
The last film I bought: Pirates of the Caribbean. Also the *only* film I've ever bought, but hey.
The last film I watched on DVD: The last *thing* I watched on DVD was an episode of Cowboy Bebop with
dreamsquirrel t'other night. The last *movie*? Um. Come to think of it, probably the Batman Movie.
The last film I watched in the cinema: A Series of Unfortunate Events, with
kenosis_kalon, at the free showing at the Hoff in February.
Five films that I watch a lot/mean a lot to me: Okay, these aren't *the* five, just *a* five, and movies in general aren't really that important to me, but, ehh.
Mary Poppins: This was my very favorite movie when I was a kid. I haven't watched it in years, but it's still an important movie to me, and it shaped me I think; or perhaps it just expressed things I already believed. Also, the music. "With tuppence for paper and string, you can have your own set of wings! With your feet on the ground, you're a bird in flight! With your hand holding tight to the string of a kite." Still never got around to reading the novel yet though.
Fellowship of the Ring: This one is meaningful not so much for the movie itself as for the places and times I've watched it. Katy put it on about six times in a row at Grandpa's house the first time we stayed there alone after he died. And we also watched it that first week after Dad died, curled up together on the couch and trying not to think to much. And watching the EE a couple times with friends, and at
dreamsquirrel and
reclusivewaffle's apartment. A time, and a place, and a feeling that ... goes very well too with the movie itself, especially the endings and the beginnings of it.
Pirates of the Caribbean: This is another one that's partly about the movie, and partly about the times and situation ... I saw it about three times over one weekend at the campus theater, and it was fall of '03. It was the first movie I'd ever gone to see by myself. I was happy. I had 'opes. Of course, about a month later everything crashed, but hearing the theme music can still bring the contentment of that month back.
The original Star Wars trilogy, the one with the Ewok song. Because, well, need you ask? But, no, beyond the obvious, I think it gives me a sense of *connection* that my extremely limited exposure to pop culture up to the time hadn't. Actually, it was probably the first of those 'movies that everybody's seen', not counting Disney animated, that I actually saw. And the best bits of that collection is Star Wars merchandise that was given to us by our grandfather, and our cousin, and Dad and Mom, and our Uncle, because they were first-generation fans and we were tweenies and it was a link.
Casablanca: The first movie I ever checked out of a rental place all by myself. Because it was one of those movies that everybody's seen and I hadn't, and I decided I wanted to enough to do for myself instead of waiting. And because it's pretty much *the* perfect movie of movies, too, of course. And I watched it with Mom and
speakerender on the new DVD player in the living room. And it's a pretty much perfect movie. (Of course, it came on PBS a few months later and I have it on VHS now, although I haven't watched it since.)
One thing that I've realized lately, which may come out a little on this list, is that for me, a *huge* part of how much I like a movie is how much I like the music of it. A good soundtrack and crap everything else, I'll want to watch it over and over. If the music doesn't make much of an impression on me, the movie doesn't really, either.
ETA: eee! "Tomb of the Cybermen" is on tonight! I can quit jonesing for good Doctor Who!

Oh, wow.. *puts it on* It's always better when you come in the middle and have absolutely no clue what's going on as opposed to just no clue.. *watches cybermen cut their way out of plastic wrap tombs*
And mm, Casablanca. I think that's why I like PotC and Princess Bride too - they're just about perfect movies - nothing extra, nothing missing..

PotC is pretty close to perfect, too, yes, in a very different way. Princess Bride I made the mistake of falling in love with the book long before I watched the movie, and, well, among other defects, Buttercup just isn't nearly pretty enough. q: Still a good movie, I suppose, but I can't far enough beyond 'the book's better' to build up any real enthusiasm for it.

Well, that's... thorough. o_o;
And I agree; music is an insanely important factor when judging movies. (And TV, and games, and... well... music!) Well composed/orchestrated/synthesized/sung/et cetera'ed sound just adds so much to the experience.

(and watch out for Cyber-Slugs...)
