the joy of pickled okra

Tonight was the International Dinner-- really an International House program (No, ya think?) but lots of Writers' House people were involved. Think combination Food Day in high school language class and open mike night. Only not awful.

Food was okay, although I chickened out of the Jamaican chicken and several unidentified gloopy things. I did try something labelled only "Japanese rice dish," which looked like angel food cake, had the texture of damp wallboard, and tasted like biodegradable packing peanuts. Only with black beans in. I'd really like to know what it was, so I can, um, get some more. Yes. Also, no decaf drinks, so I'm a bit wired at the moment. Girl-whose-name-I-really-should-know-who-wrote-slashy-Lucien-story-last-semester had brought some Belgian magazines, including Premiére, but it was October's, so no French hobbits. How sad.

The entertainment was excellent. Several Something, aka Julie and Jonathan, played. They are really very good; I love live guitars. Also some oriental dancers of varying skill levels; I like Indian pop, I've decided. And Chinese yo-yos, which are just awesome. The sounds they make! You know, I've never read anything where yo-yos of any sort are used in magic. Someone should write that.

The last act was the UMBC/UMCP lion dance troupe. They were *spectacular*. I don't think I'd ever really seen that sort of dance before in real life, but the two-person lion was doing dance moves, jumps and rolls, that most people couldn't do *at all*.
