I did read all the way to Nemesis and I WAS extremely confused by the way the ending played out -- but then I was always confused about how we were supposed to see Anacrites, given how wildly it fluctuated from book to book. My guess (if vague memory serves) is that the point when he got all gross and stalkerish on Maia marks the point at which Lindsay Davis finally decided she thought Anacrites was Actually Pretty Evil and not just one of the rotating cast of on-again off-again buddy comedy rivals, but I could be misremembering other Whoops Now He's Lovable Again moments that come after that.

(I have to admit -- before he started hitting on Maia, I spent the first several books rooting for him to marry Falco's mom and be his terrible awkward new stepdad.)

But I also am not sure how much she intends us to side-eye Falco's behavior in general in the later books, now that he has the institutional power and wealth that he lacked in the early ones. Like, he also does not behave great when faced with a possible new brother/co-heir, and that is sort of addressed in a way that makes me think maybe we are supposed to judge him for it, so .... idk?
