...yeah I didn't really make any attempt to explain the squirrels within the fic itself, since it was a prompt-fill for someone who requested them.

This is the closest thing there is to an explanation, I think.

ETA: If it helps, the squirrels are an English-speaking fandom thing. In Russian-speaking fandom, Javert is assisted by an ichthyostega instead of squirrels. So, you know, it could have been worse?
