I heard it from the people tossing the stuff in garbage bags as I was lingering after Dead Duck - it's a shame, 'cause I'd understood that too in previous years, and I'd've probably taken more stuff (to dispose of elsewhere) if I'd known sooner.
I don't think there were too many actual published zines thrown out, though - the majority of what was on the swap table was, I think, fic printed from the web and bound by the fan - if that makes you feel any better.
