January 16th, 2011 02:56 pm - Top Gear Big Bang Poll
So, the old truism about how if you look for answers, you'll find them - just possibly to a different question - is proven once again. I went and finally read The Big Meow
in order to "research" hardboiled fiction, and instead, I realized who I needed for my next ace manifesto: Rhiow, the ffeih manager of all the New York City worldgates.
The Big Meow, by the way, is not nearly as noir as that title implies, at least not so far, although their are hints it may move in that direction. The Big Meow
is the third book in the Cat Wizards series, themed around '40s Hollywood and experimentally being written as a professional online serial, and it got as far as Chapter Eight before life happened to the author and it hasn't been updated in several years now, which leaves YW fandom in the interesting place of having an abandoned online WIP in their canon. And I know I have no right to talk about people leaving WIPs hanging, but I really really
want it to be finished. Especially if she's going where it seems like she's going with ace Rhiow/Hwaith, within a noir context (Although more than I want it finished I just want some sign that dduane still knows where the internets is. :/ I never thought I'd see the day where Le Guin had a bigger online fandom presence than Duane.)
Speaking of leaving WIPS hanging! There's that Top Gear Big Bang I unwisely signed up for that I really do need to get moving on at this point. I'm only signed up for 10,000 words, and I've done 10,000 words before - in fact I have 10,000 of Top Gear WIP sitting on my hard drive right now - and yet I still am not holding my breath, because I have not *finished* anything over 10,000 words.
But I'm going to try anyway! I have started a thing of putting on Write or Die for 1,000 words every night before bed, and even if so far all I've written is Dresden Files idfic, who knows, I may actually manage some longer finished fiction this year.
I need to pick an idea to write for the Big Bang, though. So I'm putting it up for a vote. Feel free to vote for whichever one, even if a) I don't know you; b) you don't know me; c) you don't know Top Gear, or d) you have no intention of reading it regardless. I do not promise to abide by the poll numbers anyway ^_^

January 13th, 2011 04:33 pm - Nine things make a post?
Between getting things done in RL while listening to Dresden Files, and finally making those two recs posts, I am in that place where I've done too many of the things that had been sitting for ages on the top of on my procrastination list, and now I am at the loose ends of maybe having to do the really
important stuff. So, instead, here is a very scattered post of things-I-have-not-been-posting-about in the form of a list:
1. I still need to write more of fenellaevangela
's yuletide fic. Because she deserves better than she got. ): I know exactly what to write, I even bought myself the offline version of write-or-die with Christmas money, I just need to make myself sit and *do* it.
2. I also need to post at least another couple of pages of How The Master Stole Christmas, but I appear to have lost my copy of the original in the post-holiday cleaning, so I get to defer that until I find it again. :P
Instead, I drew an illustration for philomytha
's Vorkosigan fic The Earring
, featuring Lord Regent Aral Vorkosigan going slightly native on his first visit to Beta Colony. (Going slightly native in this case = wearing nothing but sandals, a tiny clingy sarong, earrings and body glitter.)( image under cut )
Want Dresden Files/Vorkosigan crossover fic now
3. Way back before the holiday, I posted my second entry in the Ace Manifestos Project on asexual_fandom
: Charlie Weasley, the closest we will get to canon
, and I don't think I ever linked it here, so here it is.
The ace manifestos project is still chugging along! And still taking sign-ups; we just had people claim John Sheppard and Castiel (finally!) but there's plenty more to go. I am debating what I want to claim for a third one, but all my first ideas would be hard
, and I want to keep doing something I can just chuck out a few paragraphs of meta and some links on. The rest of you should sign up though, if you haven't yet!
4. I've seen that audio/dialect voice meme going around, so I thought I'd link to this: North American Dialects Survey
, a study being currently run out of Yale that's looking for voice samples from people all over North America. It's just about as simple as the meme version, only For Science! And then
you can do the meme one and share with your reading list. :P
5. I'm still behind on catching up with various fandoms I'm in that have current canon (the BBC RPS ones in particular. Ten o'clock live starts next week!!) I just started catching back up with lolitics, and OMG, the role-players have been on a roll since Christmas!( Cut for British Politics RPF stuff )
Also I want a Dresden Files crossover where Mandelson, Bercow, Cable, and BONE are all on the White Council together
6. RE: posting to the lolitics comm on lj: apparently I have been over on DW long enough that I have officially forgotten how to do lj tags. I had to actually look up how to do an lj user tag after failing on my first four tries.
7. CENTRAL MARYLAND IS GETTING CHEATED OUT OF SNOW. Like, three times so far this year, they've predicted a major storm in our area, and then gone "well, actually, it looks like the heavy stuff will be to the north, south, east, and west of us." !!! Not fair.
...on the upside, though, they are starting to talk about the Chesapeake Bay freezing over
, and if that happens, I am okay with lack of snow.
(I know, I realize that severe winter weather can be very difficult and even disastrous for a lot of people - especially a major bay freeze, which can paralyze the ports, lead to shortages on the islands and Delmarva, and damage infrastructure - but it's also part of the climate and the culture here, and something we need. The Bay regularly froze over every 10-50 years, and it's something of a needed 'reset' button for the ecology. And, given climate change, I never expected it to happen in my lifetime - this may be the last time this interglacial that it does.)
8. Still listening to Dresden Files! Still enjoying in that trashy genre fiction sort of way! (The audiobooks also let me drag it out, since there is no more pairing!fic left for me to read, sigh.) Apparently, listening to Dresden Files right before sleep makes me have dreams about Pennsic War, and no, idk either, but it's consistent so far.
(Although, the night I put up stellar_dust
's recs post, instead of Dresden Files I read two new Merlin AUs I'd missed before. One of them was about Medieval LARPing, which you'd think would trigger SCA dreams if anything did, huh? But instead I dreamed about the one with Sedoretu instead
, which is okay, because I will take dreams about Le Guin poly marriages anytime.)
9. ( Here are some longer posts that I want to do soon, if I ever manage to find my round tuit. )
...okay, I suppose now I need to go work some more on the actual scary stuff, mutter.
December 6th, 2010 04:37 pm - Things I Have Done
(Finally) posted my Ace Manifesto last week: Fox Mulder, Ace
(Note to self: you have run into this before, you should remember it by now, if you post an intro post to a very old, very quiet fandom, and mention that it is old and quiet, you *will* get one of the two-dozen still active people showing up in your comments being deeply offended that you didn't mention them specifically.)
And vaguely connected to that, here are two fic recs: zortified
has written asexual!Ivan Vorkosigan: Uneasy Lies The Head
. I'm not sure how he's done it - that seems even *less* likely than ace!Jack Harkness - but it makes me happy that it has been done, and well. :D
And to prove that vanity googling sometimes works, I just stumbled on a fic that was written based on some old meta of mine, by aria
: All That Remains
. It is Highlander, Methos genfic, and it is everything I want
in Highlander fic. Sometimes I feel like, even if I never write anything again, the amount of awesome fic that's been written based on ideas I just threw out justifies my existence on its own. :D
I have been writing a bit, though. And I've just been reminded that earlier this year, I made a commitment on 12in2010
to finish at least 12 stories over 2000 words this year. I think I might actually manage 12 over 1000 words this year, which is shocking enough on its own! But a lot of it's been anon, so it is difficult to keep track of. Here (mostly for myself) is my fic accounting for the year:( 2010 fic round-up )
The other thing I pledged to do this year was read and review at least 100 books. I think I've managed the 'read' part, given a broad enough definition of the word 'book.' Review... well, I still have almost a month to finish the reviews! (I post my book reviews on LT
, where they get just enough upvotes to assure me I'm not posting into a vacuum. Would anybody be interested in them being crossposted here? I've though about it, but never gotten motivated.)
Also I am apparently posting a thing, in parts, to doctor_and_master
for their December fanfest, which is apparently How the Master Stole Christmas
, complete with anapests and illustrations. <_< The next bit should go up late tonight, hopefully, now that I've found my stylus (again.)
November 21st, 2010 10:32 pm
Finished my yuletide letter! Hodgman, Zelazny, Madelyn Mack and Bucketeers
. It is, as usual, way too long and elaborate, and I apparently got it in just under the wire before assignments went out, yay!
...since I made the yuletide letter into this huge scary over-elaborate obligation to procrastinate on this year, that means the story itself will come easy, right? Right? :D :D
Now all I need to do urgently, writing-wise, is finish my officially overdue Ace Manifesto for X-Files. Look, asexual_fandom
people! I have bitten the bullet for you, and bravely demonstrated what happens if you sign up and miss your deadline
! It is not scary at all! You should therefore totally go sign up
if you haven't yet! There are lots of things still unclaimed that someone should write!
...okay, and I should also write another section for that anon meme fic. And finish that other anon meme fic. And, oh, right, nano
ETA: Assignment came in! It is simultaneously awesome and exactly
what I deserved. :D Thank you, Spirit of Yuletide!
November 19th, 2010 10:44 pm - Yuletide Letter
Hi yuletide writer person! And whoever else is nosing around!
I am not a scary person to write for. Seriously. Write me a story in one of the fandoms I asked for, and write it with love, or at least sympathy, for the characters and the fandom and the art of story, and I will be over the moon
I know a lot of people mention things they don't want, in their letters, but the only things I consistently don't want are things nobody does on purpose anyway, so I don't see much point in mentioning them. But if you are worried that you might write something I don't want accidentally - in my opinion, yuletide is about having fun, and about stretching yourself by writing in new fandoms: I don't expect my present to be a 10,000 word epic that involves all my kinks, fixes everything wrong with the fandom, ends injustice in the world, cures HIV and brings world peace. I mean, I would not be upset if you did
manage that, but in general, if you feel uncomfortable writing something in one of my prompts, or worried that you're screwing it up? Don't worry about it. Write me something that makes you happy and it will make me happy too.
Also, you can cheat: earlier this year, I posted a list of 101 of my bulletproof narrative kinks
. If you include at least one of those in your story, use proper dialogue punctuation, and double-space between paragraphs, then seriously, you can do no wrong.
Some general notes: I love crossovers, and I don't care if I know all the fandoms. If you get struck with a crossover idea, please, write it! (If you don't that is also okay.) And if you get stuck on the matched fandom, please look at the other fandoms I requested, you never know, you might fall in love - and I won't mind if you don't know all the details of canon. My DW is almost entirely unlocked, and feel free to rummage around among the tags and old posts if you feel like stalking me more.
Also, if for some reason you need to know more, stellar_dust
is my sister, she groks yuletide, and I am hereby volunteering her as a go-between, explainer of things, and general dogsbody for you. :D
On the other hand, if you don't feel like stalking me more - if this letter is already too long for you (it is, objectively, already too long!) - feel free to ignore it. Everything you actually need to know is in the official request. And if you're somebody I already know - as I suspect you might be, for several of these fandoms - good luck, and cheers. :D
Under the cuts I am reposting my requests, adding short intros and resources on the fandoms I requested, and then going into more detail on ideas for stories (which is one thing I am never short of.) I am going to natter on at length, because OMG, a chance to natter on about my small fandoms and maybe even have an audience!( Compendium of World Knowledge - John Hodgman )( Miss Madelyn Mack Detective - Hugh Cosgro Weir )(
Their Majesties' Bucketeers - L. Neil Smith )(
A Night in the Lonesome October - Roger Zelazny )

November 18th, 2010 04:15 pm - Now I am going to actually do something nano-like, I swear.
I am so used to working right up against deadlines (whether self-imposed or not) that it feels really, really weird to finish something, and then not post it immediately. I keep finishing a part, and then going a reloading e-mail automatically for feedback even though I haven't posted anything, fail.
Why yes, I have reached that point in November when I am desperately accomplishing things in order to avoid working on my NaNo! That's basically the two things I love most about NaNo: the month before, when I can give myself permission to do lots of research and pre-writing without feeling like I should be just sitting and writing the damn thing, and the tail end of the month, when the sense of impending doom gives me that feeling of last-ditch freedom and my internal editor comes off on everything else.
(Not my yuletide letter, though. In my defense, I had it 75% written and then lost it all in a browser crash - oh, DW autosave, why are you so useless? - so I'm taking a few days to mourn.)
Also in the shadow of impending doom, I have signed up for TGS Big Bang. Yes, I should have known better, but I got permission to sign up to finish the Doctor Who Crossover of Doomy Doom, which I might actually do! Or at least manage to add 10,000 words to it in two months. (Although, having added up that I already have over 8,000 in one-and-a-half chapters of a projected at least eight, I may decide to just write the prequel - preliminary title "Jez vs. Atmos" - instead.
Here are some lists of other things I want to be writing instead of NaNo or important grownup stuff or my overdue Ace Manifesto:
People who should be paired with Jamie MacCrimmon in the period between "War Games" and Season 6b:
1. Duncan Macleod
2. Lord John Grey (Seriously, why has nobody written this one yet?)
4. ??? (If you can find me two more I might even manage a Five Things ^_^)
Vorkosigan Universe Fanfic that Should Be Written:
1. The AU where Cordelia let them try the fast-penta in Shards of Honor, and the whole Barrayaran mess ended up in Mehta and Taylor's laps instead.
2. The story where Aral's first wife's death was faked by Xav's wife, who smuggled her off to Beta, where she became an LPST and ended up mentoring Kareen. (Also, the story where Xav's wife retired to Beta and wound up best friends with Cordelia's mother, much to everybody's horror. Possibly writeable as a Cryoburn follow-up.)
3. The story about how one of those other uterine replicators post-Shards of Honor contained the Emperor's half-brother, and how the Emperor found out, and what happened afterward.
4. The story about the time Miles and Mark and Ivan went to Cetaganda for a diplomatic meeting and "met" (by way of finding him trying to sneak into the Barrayaran embassy) the youngest Cetagandan Prince, who looks a lot like Miles - and his Ba servitor, who looks even more like Miles - and what happened after Mark told Cordelia.
5. The story about what happened the first Emperor's Birthday after Twitter came to Barrayar, and how they talked Miles out of firebombing the headquarters of @eyespycoc (without telling him that it was Mark's idea in the first place.)
November 15th, 2010 12:03 am - Small fandom things.
Signed up for yuletide yesterday! Wow, that was an hour and a half of hell
. I ended up offering a lot fewer fandoms than I was going to, just because waiting two minutes for the autocomplete gets really
tedious after about fifty fandoms. (I know I could have tried copy/paste, but considering they weren't really clear on how to do it in the first place - the only way to get the instructions is a video with no transcript, really
, yuletide, really
? - I didn't want to take the risk of doing that and having it come out wrong and having to start over.)
On the upside, you can now edit your signup without having to start over! So I might add some back if they come up needy. And the if summary page ever starts working again. 6_6 I have to say, it is hard to imagine that the old site could have been more broken than this... Also, this really pointed out that there's something seriously borken about AO3's autocomplete. I mean, not just it being slow, the ways
in which it responded to being slow made it clear that the thing is not very smart compared to every other autocomplete I've used, which is probably part of why it's slow. Surely they didn't have to program the thing from scratch?
I suppose I should write my dear yuletide letter already. And update my journal tags, since I linked to the tags instead of a placeholder post in my sign-up. In the meantime, though, I went and tortured the AO3 more by uploading two other recent fest fics I've done:Title:

One thing that crossposting those to communities pointed out to me was that the one thing that makes AO3 home to me, above all, is that AO3 takes everything
. AO3 lets you design your own categories, and choose how to use theirs. Every time I post fic somewhere other than AO3, I have to spend precious cycles trying to figure out how to label it. ( Ramble about labels and categories and communities )( Ramble about writing in small fandoms when it isn't yuletide season. )
Anyway, the other interesting thing I noticed in doing the crossposting: I treat DW communities much differently from LJ ones. In that I'm much more comfortable posting to them. Maybe because, for some reason, I feel a greater sense of ownership of them here? I dunno, but I'm not the only one - intobar
had an lj and a dw mirror, and looking down the masterlist, on the lj side, 29 out of 40 people chose to post to a personal journal rather than an external archive or directly to the community. On the DW side, only 9 out of 38 did. Which is an interesting commentary on the perception that DW is all about personal journals.
...which immediately brings up the question of whether I want to repeat last year's statistical analysis of yuletide letter hosts
. Hmm. Have a while to decide, anyway.
October 14th, 2010 11:48 pm - Do All the Things
I was going to say something along the lines of, "Okay, the good thing is that I still haven't signed up for nanowrimo. I have
signed up for five new volunteer things, but at least I didn't sign up for NaNo."
But then I was messing around on the meme last night, and got a bunny for something I could maybe actually write
for NaNo. I could write it as RPF crack and then change the names and then maybe actually sell it without having to do more than change the names; I don't actually care too much about it and it wouldn't take a lot of research and if I write it as RPF crack I might not start to get all overambitious; and it would come out as a simple, formulaic novella-length SF/romance; and I could set my goal at "end of story" rather than 50,000 words.
Arrgggh. I was being so good about not being tempted by NaNo!
...The five volunteer gigs aren't quite as bad as it sounds. The Candidates' Night is one time only. And so is the Rally, if they get back to me on that, plus I was planning to be at the rally doing nothing anyway. Tag wrangling probably won't start until after Yuletide, and will probably be patchy work after that. The Environment Trust researcher position who knows, but I've been meaning to put that in for months.
...and then there's the fact that I am apparently running The Ace Manifestos Project
. Which was probably an unwise thing to sign up for, but I really
wanted it to happen, and I went into a fugue state and had a rules post all written, so I figured wth.
It's a pick-a-topic, pick-a-date type fest, designed to be low on the organization needed, and the community seems like it's at about the right activity level to make something like this happen without going overboard or needing to much mod work, so maybe it won't all go down in flames?
I already made one mistake: I realized that I should have made more effort to make the first-come-first-served thing fair with time zones, instead of just starting sign-ups as soon as I was ready, but it was 'do it while ou're rolling or you'll procrastinate on it forever', so it was a trade off. And people can still sign up for other iterations of the Doctor and Holmes if they want!
(And by "people" I mean all of you folks who are reading this. Yes, you too. Especially you, stellar_dust
, you should sign up for Jack Harkness.)
Oh! And something else I did while I was doing all the things? I made an Xenokink
entry on Fanlore. Since it needed one. I know some of you reading this are also into xenokink; you should go help out with the entry (and if you don't want to edit the wiki yourself, you can comment here with stuff I should change/add.)
September 2nd, 2010 09:01 pm - Some Things, Part 1
1. I am now declaring myself Officially Caught Up after those sixteen days I was offline for Pennsic! *whew*
2. I have started working on tidying up my last few loose ends on LJ. I finally imported my old LJ entries, and I'm planning tonight/tomorrow to reshuffle my filters and friends there and make one last sticky post. This seems like an apropos time, yeah?
But! As part of this, I decided to try to fix my ancient and deeply crufty and broken custom style by just switching over to one of the S2 site styles, since I never plan on having a paid account there.( Help me figure out a new lj layout to use? )
(And yes, the next step is fix my DW layout. And tags.)
3. I have posted fic ! And you can't see it!
Specifically, my let's-be-realistic goal for kink_bingo
was to get one square filled by the points deadline. And I did! Just barely, but I posted James May/Oz Clarke Vampire AU RPS to topgearslash
just before the deadline, thus filling my "bites/bruises" square, and crossposted to topgearslash
the next day. Alas they're both locked communities, so unless you decide to join, you can't see my story until I decide to update my AO3 account.
And while I was glazed with victory from that, I started posting a story at the new Top Gear Anon Porn meme
, but I'm so not brave enough to say which one. (you can probably guess, though. It's in my style: unfinished WIP. :P )
August 17th, 2010 10:01 pm - The Return
1. I am back from Pennsic War! I survived!
2. The mosquito problem back home is completely unacceptable
. I just spent two weeks living basically entirely out-of-doors, wearing as much or (given the heat, more often) as little clothing as I felt like, and got 0 bug bites. Within five minutes of opening the car door upon getting home, I had 12
. (And for me, mosquito bites are a large welt and >10 days of itching. yaye.) I hadn't realized just how much I'm held hostage by the little suckers until I actually lived somewhere in which I wasn't.
3. Much like before, I am having difficulty believing Pennsic War actually exists now that I'm not there any more. Surely the whole idea that such a thing might actually happen is ludicrous.
4. I have brought back with me one mysterious rash, a significant quantity of mud and ants, way too much sewing/fiber arts stuff, a vague idea that I might actually join the SCA this year, the burning desire to immediately go camping again (somewhere with no mosquitoes), a book of camp recipes that came out unexpectedly yummy, zero photographs and 281 mb of audio recordings. (Mostly of ambient/background noise, because the ambiance, the immersion, is part of what makes Pennsic ... what it is, and I feel like static photos can't capture that, so I thought I'd try sound. Also, I've still been listening to too many BBC Radio documentaries. We shall see if I ever get around to editing it into something reasonably short and shareable.)
5. I went two weeks without internet! And loved it! But now I am caught up on my internet stuff...up to, um, Sunday before last. With the help of DW's ability to read your flist by date, which is amazingly awesome but still so poorly documented that I still have to search the newsblog every time I want to remember how to do it.
6. There was another fic writer in my camp! (Well, let's be realistic - probably more than one, but she was the only one I talked about it with.) Only I completely failed to get her LJ name. Oops. I wonder if I can remember her fandoms well enough to find her anyway?
7. I have signed up for remixduello
! And you should too! It is the remix challenge for people who don't have the fannish attention span to qualify for remix proper - you pick which of your stories gets remixed, and your assigned remixer has to do that one. It still has to be a story in one of a short list of large Western media fandoms, but you only have to have written one
story like that in your entire career to qualify!
(crossovers still don't count, though. I would qualify so hard
for a crossover remix. I dream of one day having it together enough to run a crossover remix challenge. Everybody would put in a list of all the fandoms they can write, and then get assigned a story to remix that contained some subset of fandoms in that list.)
8. I just made myself a linkedin account. I kind of hate myself for it, but apparently some employers want that these days? And in general they want to be able to turn up *something* about you with a web search - "I'm security-conscious and responsible enough to keep my online activities separate from my professional life" apparently doesn't cut it anymore. (ATM the only result for my legal name and town is my Save The Internet testimonial - which is not the worst thing for potential employers to find, I guess, aside from the embarrassing uneditable typos in the first paragraph.)
9. Please tell me someone has written the fanfic where Highlander characters are active SCA members (or regional equivalent)? I've seen fic where they use medieval reenacting as an excuse for carrying swords/duelling/etc., but not where they actually participated. Surely Methos would make an effort to develop a real cover by actually joining and going to events! And Amanda would just think it was all adorable.
10. The thing that is hardest to get used to after my longest-ever camping trip (aside from the mosquitoes)? Artificial lighting and lack of natural light. Yeah, we had a battery-powered lantern and there was some on-sight lighting, but it was always really clear you were surrounded by the dark, and 90% of it was fire. When I go off artificial light (or at least go for red-spectrum, dim as possible lights), I always sleep better and more consistently, am generally happier, eat better and feel better. I should make a greater effort to do that.
June 29th, 2010 03:44 pm - Sort of a con-txt report
First: Asexuality prompt fest
I will be hanging around there as soon as I get my head together enough. Losing most of a week to brain-destroying heat has left me feeling completely off-kilter in terms of writing and otherwise accomplishing stuff (I'm about twenty pages behind on the kinkmemes I'm already keeping up with...) On the other hnad, I've been reading real books! (Easier to handle in hammock than laptops are, see.) Apropos of that:
Dear Mr. Leonard R. N. Ashley, who wrote "The Complete Book Of Werewolves" that I picked up from the con.txt swap table:
You invited people to talk about your book on the Internet, so I think I'll take you up on it.
While I generally agree with you about the terrible state of the American educational system today, I have some objections to your statement that American schoolchildren ought to "tackle Henry James' The Turn of the Screw instead of reading Alice Walker's The Color Purple and other politically correct assignments."
Speaking as a young(ish) American who tackled both of those books in school (though neither as an assignment), Turn of the Screw is not actually a particularly good novel. It is, in fact, a fairly standard Gothic novel that has had all of the actually interesting elements of Gothic novels taken out, so that it can pass as proper men's literature. If you would like to read some good, serious gothic novels that are stylistically excellent, fun to read, and have serious things to say about both the genre and the state of humanity, I recommend Austen's Northanger Abbey or Bronte's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. Oh, wait, those were both written by women, so I suppose that would be too "politically correct".
As for The Color Purple, I will grant you that, particularly in terms of pacing and structure, it has a certain lack of polish. On the other hand, it's an absorbing book that takes risks, tries things that had almost never been done before, says things that nobody else was trying to say, speaks to people nobody else was speaking to, and does it all very, very well, if not perfectly. I am sorry if there was not enough girl-on-girl, racism and gore in it for your tastes (per your previous recommendation of Moon Dance*, with its lesbian cowgirls and savage Sioux tribesmen.)
Also I am not entirely sure why you felt the need to make that comparison in the middle of what was ostensibly a survey of werewolf literature, but I am sure you had your reasons.
P.S.: I am actually working on a lesbian werewolf novel myself (scattershot and very slowly, but I am), since con.txt - two years ago? Four years ago? I forget - when one of the mods in a panel about original writing said that she was still looking for the first Great American Werewolf Novel, as she'd never seen one. I suspect it won't have enough girl-on-girl or racism for you, either.
I am used to books about the paranormal and anomalistics, especially ones about "savage monsters", having at minimum a fairly high level of passive background racism (along with fairly high levels of ablism and often misogyny and classism), but this one was toddling along being reasonably okay, if extremely and smugly idiosyncratic, when suddenly, *pow*, right in the face. Repeatedly. (The 'politically correct literature' rant was only the start :/ )
I would like to state for the record that the books I left on the con.txt swap table were books I actually liked that I happened to have extra copies of, or not enough storage space for, or to have left the fandoms of. Unlike apparently nearly everybody else who left books, who appeared to be clearing their libraries of authors who had proven to be homophobic/racist/misogynistic/
pedophilic and/or copyright hypocrites. (All that Card and Bradley and Gabaldon and Heinlein and Bear and etc, it was like a nostalgia trip through the last two years' worth of fail.)
...Oh, and while I am at it,( Dear Mr. R. D. Schneck, author of 'The President's Vampire', )
*I have not actually read Moon Dance by Somtow, or any of his other work; it's possible it's a very good book, but Ashley's description somehow did not give me confidence.
June 2nd, 2010 01:16 pm - Kink bingo! (Just like everybody else!)
I signed up for kink_bingo
this year! I love how accessible they're making it: low pressure, the minimum is one 500-word story in a year, and they've emphasized that you don't have to be able to write explicit sex or sexual characters in order to play, so I'm fairly sure I can do it. My card:( My Card )
So everybody's going on and on about their kink_bingo cards, and how lucky they are, and I looked at mine and went "huh."
I don't think *any* of the kinks I was really excited about ended up on it, and the two stories-in-progess I'd been planning to use at cheats - each of which have so many kinks they could conceivably blackout a card on their own, with no overlap - are barely represented on the card at all.
I guess that serves me right! Anyway it'll be fun, even if I only end up managing one meta post or something.
I would like to note that as I was going through the kink_wiki yesterday, exploring my options, the questions I was coming up with were things like "Would a story about someone whose erogenous zones are primarily tactile negotiating a scene with someone whose erogenous zones are primarily aural (involving sonics that person A can't produce) work for the 'silence' square?" and "does crossdressing have to involve gender, or can it involve someone whose species doesn't wear clothing dressing up as a human?" and "is 'accidental soulbond with a mechanical life-form due to shoddy safety measures during repair work' suitable for the 'electricity' square?" and "Can I do 'wrist/ankle restraints' on somebody whose limbs don't exactly fit those categories?"
... which just goes to show what pairings I have been getting bunnies for lately. Actually, having gone down the entire kink list, there are only four kinks which require somebody to have a humanoid or vaguely humanoid body (five, if you count 'shaving', which requires a mammalian one at least) and I got three of them...
I also went out to work last night without actually remembering what was on my card, and I ended up plotting out in my head an amazing
story - for a kink that's not on my card. But now I really, really want to write "How Bran Tse-Mallory and Truzenzuzex Invented Strip Personality Chess, And What Happened Afterward." (Does kink_bingo give out prizes for "most stories written for the wrong card"?)
...I may at least have to write a Bran/Tru 'ship manifesto, since Mymy/Vyssu/Mav has been such a hit. :D ...and I'm so tempted to try for a bingo with all non-human or cross-species pairings.
Anyway I was going to try to make this short, but this *is* me, and it's an excuse to talk about kink and about ideas for stories I'll probably never write, so here's ( some brainstorming for every square )

Casey (the cat) has a new toy! An actual cat toy that was made for cats! stellar_dust
gave it to her, and since her daddy just left her for a week, she needed something to work off all the energy.
has still left me logged in to her youtube account, I did my duty as a little sister and uploaded video of Casey enjoying the toy to her account: CASEY HAS A TOY.
. (Ignore the strange people in the background discussing furry porn and lolicon. Casey and I did.)
Then we had fun doing taxes! And then the strange people hauled me off to watch all the video cut scenes from story mode in the new Super Smash Brothers game, and it was like the *best crossover crackfic evar* even if I didn't know most of the characters and Yoda never showed up. Why don't people write those massive crossover fics??? I mean, there are "make your ideal superteam" memes, and sprawling RPGs, but I want the fic! Because in the fic verson, evil!Peach and evil!Zelda would have *actually* made out. Although the two of them re-enacting the end battle from Hostages of Mars
, genderfuck and all, was also pretty cool. (
Oh, speaking of genderfuck fic, I caved at the last minute and claimed two of the prompts I put in at lgbtfest
, so if in the next few months I start freaking out about figuring out a high-school AU in which Mr. Eljay, Slash, Meta, F.W., & friends are characters, that will be why.
I'm actually really excited about that fest; if everyone writes what they claimed, *nine* stories will be getting written to my prompts, which is more stories than *I personally* have written to my prompts in the last four years or so. And it's looking really awesome anyway: they had so many people sign up that they had to extend posting dates twice, so there will be five stories a day for *five weeks*, all to really thinky prompts. Either slash fandom is really excited by actual GLBT stories, or there's a large coterie of people who are hurting for small-fandom-friendly fests, or both.
(There's still, like, three slots open for the fest! get 'em while they're hot!)

Today, I missed my bus stop and had to walk an extra half-mile across campus in the drizzle. Then, every single printer on campus refused to print my paper. Next, the library caught on fire. Finally, on the way home, the train's brakes failed. Today has been an exceptional day.
Fortunately, I brought along my new dictionary of dirty words, so I did not once find myself at a loss for vocabulary. Moron! Mossback! Motherfucker! Muckmouth! Mugwump! Mule!
Also, there's this.
